Budget Watch 2018
As #RedforEd descended on the capitol today, Legislators continued to attempt a breakthrough in budget negotiations. House Republicans held a closed budget caucus this morning at 9 a.m., which lasted until nearly 11 a.m., delaying floor action.
Reports from the caucus session indicate that perhaps the House is inching closer to the magical 31 Republicans it needs to move a budget proposal, but no deal, it seems, is imminent before the weekend.
One key sticking point among final House Republican holdouts is a key provision for ASBA-whether to agree to the Governor’s demand to put a teacher pay increase in the base. ASBA continues to lobby members to include a teacher pay increase in the per-student base level, separately from District Additional Assistance and the annually required inflation adjustment.
As of this writing, the Senate has adjourned until Monday, ensuring that no budget can be completed Friday or over the weekend. The House had not yet adjourned, “just in case,” though leadership has all but conceded that a complete House agreement is also not likely.
#RedForEd Supporters March to the Capitol
As part of the planned walkout, teachers and supporters marched from Chase Field to the Capitol building and held a rally this afternoon. Check out the videos by AZEdNews for the visual impact of this event. You have to see it to believe it!
