Celebrate National School Board Recognition Month in January!

It’s National School Board Recognition Month in January and we’d like to thank you school board members for everything you do to help Arizona students thrive and succeed!

Every school board member has a reason why they serve their local school district and community.

“I serve because kids need someone to stand up for them,” said Wendy Effing, ASBA Pima County Co-Director and Flowing Wells USD Governing Board Member.

Please share with us what you’re doing to celebrate school board members so we can share it on social media and in our email newsletters by emailing Multimedia Communications Manager Jade Frazier at jfrazier@azsba.org.

It’s Time to Elect Your Board President!

Each year, your school board elects a new president during the first organizational meeting in January.

Leading up to that decision, school board members discuss who is interested in that leadership role and each of them personally weigh the increased time commitment it requires to be a leader among leaders, if they are the best fit for the goals the board has set for the upcoming year, assess whether they are skilled at running a board meeting effectively and efficiently as well as determine their ease at addressing conflict within the community or the board-superintendent team.

Superintendents can support their board members as they elect a board president by providing structure and reminding members that elections are coming up, said Mitra Khazai, ASBA Board Secretary and Madison ESD Governing Board Member.

“Generally, my superintendent will remind us who’s been president when so we know if there’s a member who has not had that leadership opportunity and also provide the specific language for making all of those motions,” Khazai said.

ASBA’s School Board President Handbook includes information about the work and role of the board president, information about the legal requirements of the organizational meeting, effective and efficient meetings, the planning and work that goes on between meetings, professional development for board members. and managing board dynamics. You can purchase copies of this valuable resource at the ASBA Bookstore or contact Leadership Development Administrative Assistant Betnahrain Gabriel at bgabriel@azsba.org or 602-254-1100.
