Spotlight: Leadership Development and Community Engagement Director Amy Castellanos

We’re excited to introduce you to ASBA’s new Director of Leadership Development and Community Engagement Amy Castellanos!

Amy is a thought leader who inspires and executes systems change. She has been working at the intersection of education, public health and behavioral health for the last 10 years of her career. In these roles, Amy has stood as the intermediary between multidisciplinary teams with shared values and opposing perspectives. The results are unified teams addressing complex challenges facing their communities. These teams have driven the response to such issues as the social effects of quarantine, the children’s mental health epidemic and shifting priorities of public education.

Amy holds a bachelor’s degree in public health, project management professional certification and is currently finishing her fellowship with School Crisis Recovery and Renewal. Amy dedicates her work to youth looking for a lifeline in the adults that serve them.

ASBA’s Leadership Development and Community Engagement Team is dedicated to empowering and engaging board members so that they may create a legacy of educational excellence for generations to come, Amy said.

Welcome Recently Re-Elected Maricopa County Co-Director!

Maricopa County Director Sophia Carrillo

Please welcome ASBA Maricopa County Co-Director Sophia Carrillo from Creighton School District who was recently re-elected at a county meeting on Monday.

County Directors are part of the ASBA Board of Directors and help set internal policy and goals for ASBA. They also serve as a communication link between ASBA and member districts in their counties.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at your county meeting! Registration is $40, and all details are on the ASBA website at https://azsba.org/event/asba-county-meetings-2023/. Upcoming county meetings with county director elections this fall include:  

  • Pinal County: Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Casa Grande ESD  
  • Yuma County: Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Gadsden ESD  
  • Cochise County: Thursday, Nov. 2 Sierra Vista USD  

Counties that do not have county director elections will take place in spring 2024. ASBA is finalizing dates and locations for these meetings:  

  • Gila County  
  • Yavapai County  
  • La Paz County  
  • Mohave County  
  • Santa Cruz County

If you’ve thought about serving on the ASBA Board of Directors Executive Committee, now is the time to find out more on the ASBA website at https://azsba.org/become-an-officer-candidate/ and view a video by ASBA Past-President Monica Trejo.

View Executive Committee position descriptions for president-elect, treasurer and secretary to decide which one you’d like to be a candidate for. Then complete the online application form open now through5 p.m. on Nov. 2, 2023.

The officer application consists of:

  • Basic information about the applicant’s board service.
  • A snapshot of the individual’s recent involvement with ASBA.
  • Narrative questions designed to demonstrate the assets the individual will bring to the ASBA Board of Directors if elected.

Applications will be reviewed by the ASBA Nominating Committee, which is comprised of a diverse group of currently serving board members from throughout the state. No interviews are required. The committee will put forth a slate of all eligible candidates for each position. All ASBA members will receive an ASBA Officer Voting Guide in November featuring all candidates for each position with information provided by each candidate in their application.  

Elections of officers will take place on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, during the ASBA Annual Membership Meeting during the ASBA-ASA Annual Conference at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in Phoenix. Every ASBA member district is eligible to send a delegate to cast its vote.

Leadership Development and Community Engagement Administrative Assistant position opening!

ASBA is seeking a full-time Administrative Assistant – Leadership Development and Community Engagement and a part-time Front Office Assistant to join our mission-driven team and contribute to cultivating excellence in locally governed school districts.

The full-time Administrative Assistant – Leadership Development and Community Engagement will join colleagues on multi-functional staff teams to support core member services and strategic initiatives. This team member will provide administrative, programmatic and logistical support for the wide variety of professional development services offered by the association. This person will also assist in the preparation of surveys, reports and other materials that support members and association operations, including: 

  • Preparing and operating online surveys and tracking response rates.
  • Collecting and presenting data for review.
  • Supporting development and publication of reports and communications.
  • Supporting processes for tracking and reviewing operational data, including member engagement and activities related to strategic initiatives.
  • Support information tracking and management within association database.
Part Time Front Office Assistant opening!

The part-time Front Office Assistant will work in a cross-functional environment with other members of ASBA’s mission-driven professional staff and join colleagues on multi-functional staff teams to support core member services and strategic initiatives, and will: 

  • Greet visitors.
  • Answer multi-line phone.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Process office supply orders.
  • Maintain schedule of conference and board rooms.
  • Managing correspondence/communications, scheduling and other administrative functions.
  • Provide support for over 30 workshops and conferences.
  • Coordination and preparation for all in-office meetings/events.
  • Ability to organize, maintain and preserve electronic database file system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
