ASBA Executive Search Update: Three Finalists Selected

ASBA has received many highly qualified applicants, showing a great deal of experience for the Executive Search. Semifinalist interviews were conducted on June 15, allowing the search committee to narrow down the candidate pool and identify top contenders. Three candidates have been selected for final interviews to be held on August 3. Our goal is to welcome a new executive director by September 1, 2024.

The committee members, including Desiree Fowler, ASBA President; Tadeo De La Hoya, ASBA President-Elect; John Sparks, ASBA Treasurer; Mitra Khazai, ASBA Secretary; Mike Hughes, ASBA Past President; Ed Buster, Vail USD Board Member; and John Fung, former Arizona Association of School Business Officials Executive Director, bring a wealth of experience and dedication to this important task.

ASBA will roll out communication efforts to announce the new executive director, and members will have the chance to meet them at the ASBA Law Conference in September and this fall’s County Meetings.

Leading Together: Uniting Board Presidents through ASBA County Director Collaborative Conversations

ASBA is pleased to offer an exceptional opportunity for all board presidents to connect and engage with their local school district board presidents through our ASBA County Director Zoom Meetings. Facilitated by your dedicated ASBA County Director, these 60-minute sessions provide a platform for sharing insights, concerns and successes from your respective districts along with information and updates from ASBA leadership.

The next meeting is on July 29, from 5-6 p.m. An invitation and Zoom details will be emailed to all board presidents directly. These quarterly meetings provide a valuable space for open dialogue and collaboration, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs within our school boards.

ASBA highly values your input and aims to learn more about how we can best serve our school boards, making these meetings an essential avenue for mutual growth and support. We encourage all board presidents to join us in these discussions to connect, listen, and contribute to the collective advancement of education in our communities every quarter.

Strengthening ASBA Governance Practices with Bylaw and Policy Changes

The ASBA Governance Committee is focusing on improving governance practices. Led by Chris King, Pima County Director and Vail USD school board member, the committee comprises members representing the entire state. They will be providing recommendations for bylaw and policy changes to enhance the association. More detailed information will be sent to all members next month. We ask that you discuss these recommended changes with your school board to ensure your vote represents your district’s views.

Delegate Assembly Includes Virtual Option

The ASBA Delegate Assembly will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn, and we are pleased to offer a virtual option. This ensures that all district delegates, regardless of their ability to travel, can participate fully in the voting process and have their voices heard as valued members of our association. Our goal is to reduce any attendance barriers and ensure that every delegate can be part of this important event. More information will soon follow.

Understanding Juneteenth: A Message from Black Alliance Presidents

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States in 1865. This significant day represents freedom, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality. It is a time to reflect on the progress made and the work still needed to ensure justice and equality for all.

As school board members, your involvement with the Black Alliance, HNAIC (Hispanic Native American Indian Caucus), and the Rural Alliance is crucial in fostering an inclusive and equitable educational environment. By collaborating with these groups, you can help develop and implement strategies that address the unique challenges faced by diverse student populations and enhance student outcomes.

To deepen your understanding and engagement, we encourage you to view a special message from Rachel Barnett, ASBA Black Alliance President. In this video, Rachel shares valuable insights on the significance of Juneteenth and the vital role school board members play.

Get Involved and Make a Difference – Serve as a County Director

ASBA’s “Get Involved and Make a Difference” campaign, launched in April, aims to increase member participation and raise awareness about volunteer opportunities within the organization. An upcoming opportunity to get involved is serving as a County Director and representing your county on the ASBA Board of Directors.

County Directors are elected by membership within each county to two-year terms at the County Workshops in September and October. Elections for County Directors occur at the County Meetings in September and October. Learn more about the role and timeline here. All County Meeting dates will soon be posted on the ASBA website.

Free Employee Handbook for Policy Subscribers

As a benefit to Policy Bridge members, the Employee Handbook is being offered for free. This newly updated handbook is fully aligned with the District’s Policy Manual and informs employees about the significant aspects of the district’s distinctive culture and organizational mission. Please contact ASBA Policy Analyst, Lynne Bondi, at or call 602-254-1100 ext. 101 to add this complimentary service.

Reminder to Members: ASBA Policy Services is here to assist you with managing your PolicyBridge queues. We understand that managing policy documents can be challenging, especially if the folders haven’t been accessed in a while. Your district can either collaborate with ASBA to tackle this task or simply provide us with your adoption dates, and we’ll handle the rest for you.
