This is no ordinary year for public education

By Linda Lyon, ASBA President

Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s already back to school time. This is an exciting time of year with students anxious to start in their new grade, teachers readying their classrooms and looking forward to lighting many a bulb in fresh, young minds. As for parents, well…let’s just say they are excited for their children to be back in school!

As we all know though, this is no ordinary year for public education in Arizona. Record-setting teacher activism drove significant increases in funding, Save Our Schools AZ delivered Proposition 305 to the ballot, and it looks like the #RedforEd movement will allow Arizonans to vote whether to “INVESTinED” as well.

In Arizona, I think it is safe to say this has been the year of public education. The attention is mostly good with many more people “awake” to the reality our district schools and their educators face each day. It also however, requires those of us who govern to be that much more diligent in the exercise of our very important duties.

Now, more than ever, we must ensure fiscal responsibility and return on investment. As we are successful in garnering more of the resources we’ve said our districts need, we must then be prepared to deliver even more of the results our students deserve.

Our district schools, with their locally-elected governing boards are the most accountable and transparent form of public education and, they deliver the greatest degree of school choice of any other option. Arizona public education is on an upward trajectory and it’s up to all of us as governing board members to lead the charge to new heights. For our students, our communities and an even brighter tomorrow.
