Full Board Awards

The Full Board Awards include the Total Board Award and The Lou Ella Kleinz Excellence in Governance Award and are presented at the ASBA – ASA Annual Conference in December.

Excellence in Governance Award

ASBA’s highest honor, this award is presented to a governing board demonstrating the most outstanding education leadership for the year. An entry form must be completed. A selection committee chooses the winner. Awarded at the ASBA – ASA Annual Conference in December.

Recognizes governing boards when at least a quorum of members have attained the level of Certificate of Boardsmanship.

Award Criteria

  • Award is based on CEU records.

Submission Deadline

  • 5 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020

Award Presentation

  • This award is presented in conjunction with the ASBA-ASA Annual Conference.

The Lou Ella Kleinz Excellence in Governance Award is ASBA’s highest honor for a full board. This award recognizes an Arizona school board that has demonstrated outstanding education leadership for the year. It is named in honor and memory of former ASBA Executive Director Lou Ella Kleinz, who served the association from 1971 to 1991.

Nogales USD received the Lou Ella Kleinz Excellence in Governance Award in 2018.

Award Criteria

The winning board will have shown board initiative, action and leadership in the following areas:

  • Focuses on students
  • Demonstrates progress in achieving goals
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity
  • Fosters increased family involvement
  • Develops collaboration within the community, such as with social agencies, community groups and other governing bodies
  • Creates a district and school culture which fosters equity, innovation and high expectations for all
  • Past winners may apply after seven years and a quorum of the board must be different than the previously winning board
