Become an Officer Candidate

Interested in becoming an officer on the ASBA Board of Directors? 

Five officers serve as the executive committee on the ASBA Board of Directors. They are the president, president-elect, treasurer, secretary and immediate past-president. Each position is held for a one-year term. The officers serve on the board alongside 17 county directors and ex officio voting members that include caucus and alliance presidents.  

Election of the president-elect, treasurer and secretary are held each year at the ASBA Annual Membership Meeting.

Application and Deadline for Applying to Become an Officer Candidate 

Those interested in running for president-elect, treasurer or secretary for 2021 must submit an online application by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020. (The online application opens Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020.)

  • Basic information about the applicant’s board service 
  • A snapshot of their recent involvement with ASBA 
  • Narrative questions designed to demonstrate the assets the individual will bring to the ASBA Board of Directors if elected

Process for Selecting Candidates 

Applications will be reviewed by the ASBA Nominating Committee, which is comprised of a diverse group of currently serving board members from throughout the state. No interviews will be required; the nominating committee will make its decisions based on candidate applications only. Per ASBA bylaws, the Nominating Committee is charged with putting forth a slate of one or more candidates for each position: president-elect, treasurer and secretary. 

Those selected to move forward as candidates will be notified by the nominating committee chair. 

ASBA Officer Voting Guide 

On Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, all ASBA members will receive an “ASBA Officer Voting Guide” featuring all candidates for each position. The guide will contain the comprehensive information provided by each candidate in their application. 

Election of Officers 

Election of officers will take place on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. at the ASBA Annual Membership Meeting, which will be held virtually via Zoom. Every ASBA member district is eligible to send a delegate to cast its vote.  

Candidates put forth by the Nominating Committee must be present at the meeting to be elected and will have the opportunity to give a speech of up to two minutes. 

Individuals may also choose to run from the floor for one of the three positions and will be given the opportunity to make a two-minute speech. No information about individuals who choose to run from the floor will be presented to members in the “ASBA Officer Voting Guide.”

ASBA Board of Directors Officer Application

  • All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2020, for consideration. Only complete online applications will be considered. Applicants must be in good legal standing with ASBA to be serve on the ASBA Board of Directors.

    The nominating committee will review applications and put forward a slate of candidates in an “ASBA Officer Voting Guide” to ASBA members by Nov. 23, 2020. (No interviews will be required; the nominating committee will make its decisions based on candidate applications only.)

    Election of officer for the 2021 ASBA Board of Directors will take place at the ASBA Annual Membership Meeting on Dec. 3, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held via Zoom. Candidates must be present at the meeting to be elected and will be expected to give a two-minute speech.
