News from Week 5
This week saw longer agendas and next week will be longer still. Next week is the last chance for bills to be heard in their chamber of origin, so if a bill doesn’t pass through committee by this time next week, it likely won’t have any chance of passage. As such, the House and Senate both have packed agendas and we hear the Senate may meet for a special extra committee on Thursday of next week.
Also of note, SB 1014 (English language learners; instruction; budgeting) was signed by the Governor this week. We are really excited to see this reform officially cross the finish line and give greater flexibility to our state’s EL students.
Head over to Capitol Impact for our staff summaries of all the bills we heard this week.
On February 14, Congress passed a spending package to avoid another government shutdown, effectively funding the government through September 30, 2019. President Trump signed the omnibus package shortly thereafter, ahead of the Friday at midnight deadline.
