Recap of Week 4
Both the House and Senate had relatively short agendas this week, but the Senate heard some interesting bills. Of note is SB 1099 (patriotic youth groups; school access) which allows for groups like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to present in front of school groups. SB 1101 (schools; calculated opportunity index) creates a poverty weight based on free and reduced price lunch eligibility, and SB 1230 (extraordinary special education needs fund) which infuses much-needed resources into special education for certain diagnoses.
Also of note, SB 1014 (English language learners; instruction; budgeting) passed through the Senate unanimously this week! Its companion in the House is ready to be Third Read next week. We’re excited to see the ELL bill on the fast track. Head over to Capitol Impact for our staff summaries of all the bills we heard this week.
Join us for Lobby Day!
Please join the ASBA GR team for our 2019 Lobby Day! We will have some presentations on advocacy and lobbying techniques, a Q & A session with legislators, and remarks from Kathy Hoffman, Superintendent of Public Instruction. After the House Education committee, attendees are invited to a cocktail reception with High Ground and SOS AZ to mingle with legislators.
