Arizona School Board Association Events

The Arizona School Board Association runs many events throughout the year to provide training, education or a venue for communication for a variety of groups. To learn more about individual events, please visit the following links below.

ASBA’s Annual Conference is the celebratory end-of-year gathering of school board members and other district leaders in the state. Attendees hear from national speakers, focus on statewide education initiatives and network and share experiences with other educational leaders across Arizona. School board members, students and educators are celebrated during the Annual Awards Program and the Golden Bell Luncheon. This event is held in December.

ASBA’s signature event is the largest gathering of school board members, district leaders and attorneys specializing in school law across the state. There is a plethora of options that provide school board members with the knowledge about how boards work, a general understanding of the issues in education, knowledge about student achievement and knowledge about how to best advocate for students beyond the board table. This event is held in September.

BOLTS professional development seminars are provided in Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson which focus on leadership topics for school boards and super­intendents. An administrative assistant track is also provided. This event is held in Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff during the months of January and February.

ASBA County Meetings provide opportunities for ASBA officers, staff and locally-elected county directors to share state-level issues, celebrate board member training accomplishments with awards, and hold elections for open county director positions in each county. The Academy of Board Development Awards are also presented to all qualifying school board members. These meetings are held in September and October.
Representatives of ASBA member boards convene to decide the association’s political position on the diverse interests of public school governing boards for the year ahead. This event is held the day after the Law Conference in September.

The Equity Event digs deep into timely, relevant, thought-provoking interactive sessions that look at educational equity to help close the achievement gaps for all students in Arizona.

This two-day experience aims at taking you and your board from a deeper understanding of equity to strategic action and impact.

Attendees can hear from thought-provoking keynote speakers, expert presenters, experienced facilitators and participate in interactive discussions, designed to build practical knowledge and skills for equity action and impact at the board level.

This event is held in Feb.

This fast-paced, one-day conference provides a preview of the coming legislative session with an examination of current educa­tion public policy issues by expert presenters and informative, interactive panel discussions with influential policymakers and lawmakers. This event is held in November.
New Board Orientation is newly elected school board members a full-day overview of the basics of board service for newly elected school board members, including governance and practical boardsmanship, policy, funding, advocacy and board-community relations, as well as an overview of the services and opportunities provided throughout the year by ASBA to school boards statewide. This event is held in December on even-number years, as part of a pre-conference the day before the Annual Conference.
The Policy Workshops are intended for district administrators and staff to learn more about current policy topics and PolicyBridge in an in-depth and interactive way. This event is held regionally in March and October.
ASBA provides annual webinars on timely topics to better in­form members. Past topics include Legislative & Budget Wrap Webinar, AzMERIT scores, Do’s and Don’ts with Bonds & Over­rides, Percentage of Dollars in the Classroom and much more. These webinars are held during different months of the school year.

This summer conference encourages school boards and super­intendents to get away together to help expand their learning on diverse topics and current educational issues.

An administrative assistant track is also provided. This event is held in June.
