Dear ASBA Members,
Today marks a historic victory for Arizona’s public school students. Judge Dewain Fox has ruled that the state’s current capital funding system for public schools is unconstitutional and must be reformed.
This ruling validates what educators, school boards and communities have long known, every student, regardless of their ZIP code, deserves safe, well-maintained facilities and equitable resources to support student success.
The case, Glendale Elementary School District et al. v. State of Arizona, was filed in 2017 by Glendale Elementary School District, Crane Elementary School District, Chino Valley Unified School District and Elfrida Elementary School District, along with the Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA), Arizona Education Association (AEA) and Arizona School Administrators (ASA).
“This decision sends a clear message, Arizona must meet its constitutional responsibility to fund our public schools the way they should be. Every child deserves the same opportunity to learn in a safe, well-resourced environment,” said Ellen White, ASBA Executive Director.
We will continue to work with lawmakers and education partners to ensure this ruling leads to real improvements for students across Arizona.
Thank you for your continued dedication to Arizona’s students and for standing with us in this important fight.
In partnership,
Ellen White
