The Value of Structured Evaluation

Structured evaluations are important for improving the effectiveness of school boards and superintendents. They provide a clear, research-based method for assessing performance, identifying opportunities for growth, and for making decisions that best utilize district resources.

2 Types of Evaluations

Board Self-Evaluation

What It Is

The Board Self-Evaluation is designed to help school boards assess their own performance. It is offered free of charge to member districts, and the results are district specific. This structured, research-based process enables boards to reflect on their effectiveness in key areas such as conduct and ethics, vision, structure, accountability, and advocacy.

How It Works

Upon request, the board and superintendent receive a link to ASBA’s online evaluation tool. Each board member completes the evaluation anonymously, which typically takes about 10 minutes. After everyone has submitted their responses, ASBA generates a detailed report that breaks down the results by specific questions and benchmarks.

What You Get

The report allows the board to see areas of consensus and identify opportunities for improvement. It’s a valuable resource for setting board goals and aligning them with the district’s objectives. If needed, ASBA can also facilitate discussions to help the board interpret the results and create actionable goals.

Superintendent Evaluation

What It Is

The Superintendent Evaluation tool is comprehensive, customizable, and provided by ASBA for boards to evaluate their superintendent’s performance. The evaluation focuses on six key domains that cover the superintendent’s core responsibilities.

How It Works

After requesting the tool, the board receives a structured framework for evaluating the superintendent. The tool is flexible, allowing the board to customize aspects such as the weight of different domains, linking performance pay, and incorporating specific goals. The board members conduct the evaluation themselves, and the results help clarify expectations and improve communication between the board and the superintendent.

What You Get

The evaluation provides a clear picture of the superintendent’s performance across multiple domains. It’s a tool designed to promote accountability and align the superintendent’s work with the board’s strategic goals. ASBA can also offer facilitation services to ensure the evaluation process is smooth and effective, helping the board and superintendent use the results to drive improvement.
