Villa de Paz Elementary’s Dreamscape learn lab: A new frontier in education
Revolutionizing learning through virtual reality and computer science
Villa de Paz Elementary School in the Pendergast Elementary School District is redefining the learning experience with its innovative Dreamscape Learn Lab. This cutting-edge program allows students to step away from traditional textbooks and immerse themselves in virtual worlds that bring complex concepts to life. By incorporating hands-on learning and interactive experiences through programming, robotics, and digital design, the school is setting a new standard in education, sparking curiosity and engagement in ways never before possible. Villa de Paz is the first elementary school to offer a modernized learning experience. The program is currently offered to seventh and eighth graders, but as the program progresses, the course will be offered to younger students as well.
“There are some amazing teachers here and the way of teaching computer science because not every school gets to teach computer science,” said Samuel Granado, a Villa de Paz Elementary student. “So, I feel very special that I get to learn computer science and coding because it is very important.”
A new era of hands-on learning
The Dreamscape Learn Lab goes beyond the confines of the conventional classroom. Students are no longer passive recipients of information; they actively engage with the material, transforming lessons into exciting, unforgettable experiences. Imagine stepping into an alien zoo, navigating unfamiliar ecosystems, and solving environmental challenges. This is just one of the many immersive activities that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and empathy as students explore and protect the virtual worlds around them.
This hands-on approach not only captures students’ attention but also boosts their motivation and excitement for learning. When asked about their experiences, many students expressed eagerness to incorporate virtual reality (VR) into subjects beyond science and career exploration. It’s clear that the Dreamscape Learn Lab has sparked a genuine interest in learning that transcends the classroom setting.
“Sometimes if you look to your left and right, you can see your friends and actually see them move around, and that’s really cool,” said Oscar Salinas, another elementary student at Villa de Paz.

Equipping students for the future
By introducing programs like virtual reality and computer science at a young age, Villa de Paz is preparing students for a tech-driven future. Coding and VR activities teach valuable skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, all while fostering collaboration among students. In a world where technological advances shape nearly every industry, these skills provide students with a competitive edge in the job market.
“Visualizing complex concepts in a 3D environment helps students grasp abstract ideas more easily, leading to better understanding and retention,” said Dr. Shelmon Brown, chief academic officer.
In addition to technical abilities, VR and computer science promote teamwork, communication, and adaptability—traits essential for both academic success and future careers. As students explore new technologies, they develop a mindset of continuous learning and innovation, essential for thriving in a rapidly evolving job landscape.
The computer science academy: Building tomorrow’s innovators
Alongside the Dreamscape Learn Lab, Villa de Paz offers a comprehensive Computer Science Academy designed to expose students to coding, computational thinking, and digital design. Through hands-on projects in robotics, programming, and digital design, students are developing a deep understanding of how technology impacts their daily lives and how they can use it to shape the future.
“Our district’s mission is to prepare students to succeed in a globally connected society, and Villa de Paz’s Computer Science Academy exemplifies this commitment. Through unwavering dedication, the staff has transformed learning opportunities, empowering students to thrive academically and personally,” said Dr. Jennifer Cruz, superintendent. “When visitors tour Villa de Paz and engage with our students, they are often struck by their confidence, articulation, and capability. However, their excellence is no surprise to our staff—it’s the standard we set and expect every day. In education, we know that we get what we expect, and at Villa de Paz, the expectation is greatness.”
This program integrates computer science across various subjects, allowing students to see the connections between technology and real-world applications. The skills learned in the academy strengthen students’ problem-solving abilities, creativity, and collaboration, while also opening doors to future careers in STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. As the West Valley positions itself as a leader in technology and advanced manufacturing, ensuring students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel in their future endeavors remains a top priority.

Transforming education with VR
The Dreamscape Learn Lab has proven to be a game-changer for Villa de Paz students. Instead of reading about the solar system or environmental issues, students can journey through space or explore the Colorado River in VR simulations. These immersive experiences allow students to see and interact with complex concepts in ways traditional classrooms simply can’t replicate. The result is a deeper understanding of the material, higher retention rates, and a greater enthusiasm for learning.
The excitement surrounding the Dreamscape Learn Lab is palpable, with students eagerly anticipating their VR days and completing more classwork related to the immersive experiences. For many students who struggled with traditional learning methods, VR has provided a newfound sense of confidence and engagement.
“So, I think that that is an amazing way for other students to learn because everybody learns differently,” said Don Neville, e-learning specialist. “So, I think that cutting-edge technology can really help in immersive and different levels of education.”
A community of innovation and support
Villa de Paz stands out not only for its technological advancements but also for its strong sense of community. The school’s commitment to fostering an environment where every student is supported and valued is integral to its success. Teachers, staff, and families work together to create a culture of inclusivity and innovation, where students are encouraged to take risks, think creatively, and explore new ideas.
“I think what makes the school so special is all the kids and the teachers, and just being able to have fun and enjoy all the stuff that they teach me,” said Alexander White, another elementary student at Villa de Paz.
The school’s partnerships with families, local businesses, and community organizations further enrich the student experience, providing real-world connections that enhance learning. This collaborative spirit makes Villa de Paz not just a school but a place where students can discover their passions and build a solid foundation for the future.

Preparing students for tomorrow’s world
As the world continues to embrace technological advancements, it’s clear that programs like the Dreamscape Learn Lab and Computer Science Academy are giving students the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
These programs teach not only technical skills but also critical life skills like adaptability, resilience, and collaboration. By fostering a love of learning and preparing students for the challenges of tomorrow, Villa de Paz is shaping the future of education today.
“The Pendergast community is an incredibly close-knit and supportive community,” said Abraham Gonzales, principal of Villa de Paz Elementary School. “Families, educators, and community partners work together to create opportunities for students, ensuring that they have the resources and encouragement to succeed.”
