Voices That Matter
The ASBA “Voices That Matter Campaign” was created to honor voices, emotions and experiences on racial injustice in the United States.
ASBA condemns racism and police brutality against black people. Along with our community, we mourn the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the endless list of black lives lost as a direct result of racism, white supremacy, and systemic oppression.
Black, brown and other underrepresented voices in our schools must be amplified. This campaign is one opportunity to do this and help our staff and members express themselves and heal through these difficult times.

This kind of piggybacks off Steve’s experience witnessing the riots in Watts in 1965, but the most formative memory I have of realizing the injustice that exists in the world was in 1992 with the acquittal of the police officers who were videotaped beating Rodney King. The ensuing riots in LA were not something I saw in person, but the continuous news cycle reporting on it was unavoidable, and as someone who had just started high school and was gaining a new perspective on life in general, it was eye-opening to discover that the clear line differentiating right and wrong that I was led to believe in does not actually exist.
